THE
LAW CORNER
LAW CORNER
The Law Corner is guided by a twofold vision. One is to offer local residents of limited means with high quality and timely legal advice. The other is to provide a point of access for students and volunteers to learn more about the practice of law and build a network among like-minded peers.
We believe that both dimensions of this vision can be realised by drawing on the skills, interest and good will of the Somers Town neighbourhood and associated collaborators. In this way, our collective identity is strengthened and we learn to draw upon one another in serving the interests of justice.
The Law Corner provides free legal advice to residents of Somers Town and St Pancras. Our approach is unique in that rather than just providing a one-off 15 minute consultation we try to see cases through to the end and support you through the entire process. Where possible, we seek to empower our clients and involve them in the process such that the generated knowledge is shared.
Our current areas of practice include:
To request the services of The Law Corner, please get in touch via the contact form.
Your application will be assessed against our criteria, which includes a means test. Please note that while the Law Corner strives to assist everyone in need, preference will be given to residents of Somers Town and St Pancras or those with a connection to the neighbourhood. If we can be of assistance to you, we will assign you a suitable legal advisor, who will then schedule an initial consultation with you.
Initial consultations typically last between 20-30 minutes, and take place in person at the Living Centre or over the phone. You are kindly asked to have all relevant documents with you.
Following your initial consultation, your assigned legal advisor will consider whether the Law Corner is able to retain you as a client and explain any next steps, including those necessary to formalise the client-lawyer relationship.
The Law Corner is committed to confidentiality. All details of your case will remain confidential to your volunteer advisors and their supervisors. We will keep case files for a period of six years from our last contact with you, after which they will be destroyed.
The Law Corner is staffed by a team of volunteer legal advisors, most of whom are qualified lawyers (either solicitors or barristers).
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please get in touch via the contact form below.
